Ben - whaaa?

From the ESPN Website:

Over the past weekend, authorities said, Professional Wrestler Chris Benoit strangled his wife, suffocated his son and placed a Bible next to their bodies before hanging himself with a weight-machine cable in the couple’s suburban home. No motive was offered for the killings, which were discovered Monday.

Anabolic steroids were found in Benoit’s home, leading officials to wonder whether the drugs played a role in the slayings. Some experts believe steroids cause paranoia, depression and violent outbursts known as “roid rage.”

Recent Pro Wrestler Deaths

Chris Benoit’s death in a murder-suicide is the latest in a string of professional wrestlers who died relatively young. Here is a list of some prominent performers and how they died:

Date Name Age Cause of Death
2005 Eddie Guerrero 38 Heart failure
2002 David Smith 39 Heart attack
1999 Rick Rude 40 Heart failure believed caused by overdose of GHB, steroids

The WWE, based in Stamford, Conn., issued a news release Tuesday saying steroids “were not and could not be related to the cause of death” and that the findings indicate “deliberation, not rage.” It also added that Benoit tested negative April 10, the last time he was tested for drugs.

If you visit the WWE website, you’ll find this comprehensive story about Benoit’s death:

STAMFORD, Conn., June 25, 2007 – World Wrestling Entertainment was informed today by authorities in Fayette County, Ga., that WWE Superstar Chris Benoit, his wife, Nancy, and his son were found dead in their home. Authorities are investigating, but no other details are available at this time.

It’s pretty obvious that steroids are to blame for this incident, and it’s really irresponsible for the WWE to react the way that they have. Just because the killings were protracted does not inherently suggest that Benoit planned the slaughter. Indeed, if any mood or behavioral trait could be proscribed to Benoit during his final hours, his actions seem extremely confused and obfuscated. Putting aside speculation, even if he did plan the killings, it’s misleading to suggest that, just because Benoit didn’t kill everyone all at once, steroids weren’t to blame.

This is a growing trend in professional wrestling, and the WWE doesn’t want to address this problem because no steroids equals a loss in revenue for the company.

Wrestlers of the world, unite! Create a union and protect yourself! Otherwise, you’ll join the legions of has-been burnouts like this guy.
