Delegate number confusion explained
I noticed that even though Iowa and New Hampshire are the only states to have held primaries or caucuses so far this election season, H(B)illary Clinton already has a whopping 187 delegates in her favor compared to Obama’s 78. I wondered, how is this possible when Obama won Iowa and split the New Hampshire Delegates? The answer reveals the DNC’s control over the nomination process.
Of the 4,049 delegates to the Democratic National Convention, 796 are what is known as superdelegates. The superdelegates for the Democratic Party consist of mostly party leaders and elected officials. Technically, they are beholden to no one, and especially not the voters. Generally, they vote for the “frontrunner”, or for whomever the party wants. There are however, a number of these superdelegates that remain undecided.
This nomination process is so fucked up.
